About This Special Issue
In recent years, there has been increasing acknowledgement of the important role mental health plays in achieving global development goals. Mental health refers to emotional, cognitive, behavioral, psychological and social well-being. It affects how people think, feel and behave. It also helps determine how people handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Mental health can affect daily living, relationships and physical health. It can preserve a person’s ability to enjoy life. People with mental health conditions often experience severe human rights violations, discrimination and stigma. Although the term mental health is in common use, many conditions that doctors recognize as psychological disorders have physical roots. The most common types of mental disorders are anxiety disorders, mood disorders and schizophrenia disorders.
There is no physical test or scan that reliably indicates whether a person has developed a mental illness.
